What Old Naples is built from
The oldest fabric in the city, running back from the pier between Gulf Shore Boulevard and the bay: early-twentieth-century frame cottages under live oaks, low masonry houses from the 1950s and 1960s, and a steady wave of full rebuilds on the same narrow lots. Ground floors are mostly tile, terrazzo or stone, with area rugs laid over them rather than fitted carpet.
A walkable pocket either side of Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South, mixing long-tenured owners with households that arrive in November and are gone by Easter. Good hand-knotted rugs are common, and a great many of them were bought somewhere else and brought down here.
The Old Naples problem
Old Naples is a few blocks from open water and roughly seven feet above it, and two things follow from that. The first is salt. Onshore air carries it inland and it settles into the pile, and salt is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the air and holds it against the fibre every time the humidity climbs, which through the wet season is most of the day. The second is the empty house. A place shut in April with the thermostat left high spends the whole summer at a humidity the rug cannot dry at, and nobody opens the door until the autumn. What is waiting is not a stain, it is a smell and a foundation that has gone slack and heavy. Tile and stone underneath make it worse rather than better: they absorb nothing, so everything the rug picks up stays in the rug.
