What Port Royal is built from
Dredged out of marshland from the early 1950s by John Glenn Sample, who named the streets in pirate tradition — Gin Lane, Rum Row, Galleon Drive. Wide waterfront lots on man-made canals and peninsulas with access to the Gulf through Gordon Pass, built out first with low mid-century houses and since with much larger replacements on the same water.
Waterfront households, a high seasonal share, and formal rooms that are furnished properly and then stand unused for months at a time. That last part is the condition that matters most for what happens to the rug in them.
The Port Royal problem
Every house here has water on at least one side and the water is brackish and tidal, so salt in the air is permanent rather than occasional. Salt in a wool pile behaves like a sponge with a memory: it holds damp against the fibre, and the rug never gets a properly dry spell between afternoon storms. Elevation is the other half. This is ground made by dredging, a few feet above a tidal canal, on the surge side of any storm that crosses this coast — Ian put eight feet of surge across Marco Island in 2022, twenty miles south of here. Surge water is salt water carrying whatever it crossed on the way in, which makes a wet rug a decontamination problem rather than a drying one. And in a seasonal house nobody finds it for days.
